What Is the Difference between Teflon Wire and Silicone Wire?

08 14, 2024

Teflon wire and silicone wire are two commonly used wire materials in high-temperature wires. In production and manufacturing, there are significant differences between the two due to the use of different materials and processes. Performance determines the role in different fields. The main differences between Teflon wire and silicone wire:

1. Material: Teflon wire can be divided into three types according to the different insulating materials: FEP, PFA, and PTFE; silicone wire mainly uses silicone rubber as the insulating material.

2. Characteristics: Teflon wire is resistant to high and low temperatures (-65~250℃), resistant to various media, and has excellent aging resistance, acid and alkali resistance, waterproof, oil resistance, moisture resistance, humidity resistance, corrosion resistance, flame retardant and other properties; silicone wire is resistant to high and low temperatures (-60℃ - 200℃), wear resistance, aging resistance, acid and alkali resistance, soft and good insulator, tasteless and odorless.

3. Application: Teflon high temperature wire is suitable for working under high temperature conditions of 600V and below, such as aerospace, national defense, metallurgy, chemical industry, petroleum, shipbuilding, roads and other high-tech fields as well as automobiles, food, lighting, etc.; Silicone high temperature wire: Suitable for installation and connection of electrical circuits with high temperature AC rated voltage below 500V, and widely used in paint booths, lighting and household appliances.

From the outer diameter, the same specification such as 0.75mm, the silicone wire is much thicker, while the Teflon wire diameter is thinner. Teflon wire has better electrical properties than silicone wire, and the thickness is much smaller under the same voltage resistance. From the appearance, the surface of the silicone wire is matte, the color is not very bright, and the surface is a little gray, and it will stick to your hands when you touch it with your hands; the Teflon wire has a good gloss and is very smooth when you touch it with your hands;
From the perspective of softness and hardness, the silicone wire is like a rubber wire, very elastic, and it will bounce back immediately when you bend it with your hands; the Teflon wire is much harder and is easy to change after being bent by hand. If you scratch the surface of the Teflon wire with your hands, there will be at most a mark, and it is difficult to scratch the surface, so the tensile strength is better than that of the silicone wire. The silicone wire will break the skin if you scratch it lightly. Although they have good elongation, the tensile strength of the silicone wire is poor.

There is a big difference between the two high-temperature wires, so there are also different differences in application. Teflon high-temperature wire is widely used in the industrial field, while the main application areas of silicone high-temperature wire are home appliances, electronics industry, etc.
